With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, many of us will be scrambling to find something special to do under the constraints of lockdowns. Luckily, Gardeon has some easy solutions: all you need is some good weather and a backyard!
Date by the fire
If you don’t have a fire pit...you should. A staple of the outdoor gathering, fire pits are a nice and cosy way to make the most of a cold night. Sit around the fire telling ghost stories, roast marshmallows or invest in some camp cookware and make a full dinner.
Outdoor cinema
It’s amazing what you can do with a white sheet and some movie magic. Hang a sheet onto a washing line or the side of your house and use a portable projector to watch your favourite movies outdoor cinema style. With some comfortable seating and a bag of popcorn, you can’t go wrong with this perfect date.
Scavenger/treasure hunt
No matter what age you are, a good backyard hunt is always fun. Make a separate list of things for each of you to find in the backyard, perhaps related to your time together, or hide any presents and go on a treasure hunt with clues.
Stargazing
You don’t need a fancy telescope to stargaze, just a clear sky and a picnic blanket. If you don’t care much for astronomy, have fun making up your own constellations and just observing the beauty of nature. If you want to go a bit deeper, invest in a pair of binoculars and a planisphere. Google common constellations and see how many you can find!
Backyard camping
You’ve already spent most of the night outside...why not sleep there too? Pull out your favourite tent and sleeping bags and become one with nature. If you’re a lover of camping, it will be a fun and intimate staycation. If you prefer the comforts of the indoors, you can rest assured that coffee, a shower and warm blankets are right nearby when you need them. Who knows...you might enjoy getting out of your comfort zone!
Plant new life
With burning summer over and autumn on the horizon, now is a good time to set up a garden! Great plants for February include capsicum, leeks, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and tomatoes. Set up a worm farm and a compost heap and reap the benefits of fertile soil and a smaller carbon footprint. If you don’t have a plot already set up, not to worry: raised garden beds and home greenhouses are available all year round. Not sold on the garden? Then plant a solitary tree and mark it with a message from the both of you for future generations. Nothing could be more romantic!
Make a mess
There are just some things that are better done outside. Whether it’s painting a still life or taking up some amateur sculpting, couples arts and crafts outside are a good way to wind down and have fun without worrying about making a mess inside. More time to focus on fun – and flirtation!
